What is Lexan & Motorsports Polycarbonate?
Lexan (a brand name for polycarbonate resin) and acrylic sheets are high-impact, lightweight polymers used in motorsports to replace factory glass windows. While polycarbonate is structurally ductile and virtually shatterproof, it is extremely soft at a molecular level compared to silica-based automotive glass. It lacks inherent scratch resistance and is highly vulnerable to chemical degradation. Exposing raw polycarbonate to standard commercial glass cleaners containing ammonia or harsh petrochemical solvents causes immediate surface hazing, chemical cracking, and permanent clouding.
Professional Cleaning Method
1. Heavy Track Grit Flush: Never wipe a dry Lexan window. Blast away heavy track rubber, track dust, and abrasive grit using a copious, low-pressure water rinse.
2. High-Lubricity Encapsulation: Drench the window using Quick Wash (Blue) or a thick blanket of Foam Bath Wash & Shine Soap (Orange) to encapsulate remaining abrasive particles.
3. Linear Microfiber Pass: Using an ultra-plush, clean, high-GSM microfiber towel soaked in your lubricated solution, gently wipe the window in straight, single-direction parallel lines. Never wipe in circles or rub back-and-forth, which traps grit and creates permanent swirl marks.
4. Optical Shielding: Buff the window dry using a fresh, damp microfiber towel. Immediately apply a layer of Top Coat Graphene Detailer (Pink) or Vinyl Wrap Quick Detailer (Yellow). This deposits an ultra-slick polymer barrier that seals the sensitive plastic surface, providing vital UV protection and making future track rubber easier to slide off.
