What is Interior Plastic Fading & Ashy Dashboard Degradation?

Interior plastic fading is a symptom of polymer embrittlement. Automotive interiors are subjected to extreme "greenhouse" heat and UV radiation. This causes the essential plasticizers, the oils that keep plastic flexible and dark, to migrate to the surface and evaporate (often seen as a "fog" on the inside of the windshield). Once these oils are gone, the plastic becomes "ashy," brittle, and prone to cracking. Restoration requires a non-greasy, water-based penetrant that re-hydrates the substrate and leaves behind a microscopic UV-absorption layer to halt further degradation.

What Causes This Issue?

  • UV Photo-Degradation: High-energy UV rays breaking down the chemical bonds of the plastic surface.
  • Thermal Outgassing: Heat-induced loss of plasticizers leading to a dry, chalky appearance.
  • Harsh Cleaners: Using high-pH "all-purpose" cleaners that strip away protective oils without replacing them.

How to Prevent Future Damage

  1. Apply ImportWorx Dress All monthly to maintain a deep, satin finish and UV protection.
  2. Use ImportWorx Quick Wash Hybrid Detailer for light dusting to ensure you aren't stripping the surface.
  3. Utilize a windshield sunshade to reduce the "Greenhouse Effect" and lower peak interior temperatures.
